5 things you need to start a minimal wardrobe

being someone with not very many clothing options now (as i am traveling the world and now living in costa rica) i had no choice but to bust down to a minimalist wardrobe, but here are 5 must-haves to begin your minimal wardrobe.

a note to begin with: when creating a minimal wardrobe you have to be willing to spend a little more than usual because you are investing in good, quality stylish pieces versus cheap, quick fashion items. so, one must have that in mind when shopping to start your minimal wardrobe.

1. good jeans

to start you need a good foundation. you need a pair of good, high quality jeans. jeans, for me at least, are the foundation of every outfit. find yourself a pair of jeans that fit in the waist and aren’t too tight when you sit down, they fit the length of your legs (unless you’re going to have a pair of cropped jeans that you’ll wear almost all the time, even in cold weather, i suggest definitely finding a good length jean), and aren’t too tight. for me, i like my jeans to have a little stretch to them.

my favorite pair of jeans that i own are a pair of j. crew high-rise skinnies. they have the perfect amount of stretch, but they never seem to stretch out. i absolutely love them. my favorite pair they no longer sell, so i’m gonna hold onto them until the fall apart.

2. white t-shirt

everyone needs a good white t-shirt. a nice white t-shirt that fits under the arms with a pair of nice blue jeans is the most timeless outfit. you honestly could never go wrong with this outfit. this will probably be one of the items you might have to replace a couple of times a year, just because of the fact the shirt is white and can get dingy.

3. jean jacket

before i left the states i gave my jean jacket to goodwill and til this day i really wish i hadn’t. a jean jacket can transform an outfit from ordinary and boring, to a little more put together and well dressed.

4. black long-sleeved tee

just like a white t-shirt, you can never go wrong with a black long-sleeved tee. this can be paired with so many things. and that‘s just that. get you a black long-sleeved tee.

5. shoes

for this one, this is all about you. you need one pair of shoes that you wouldn’t mind wearing everyday of your life, and for me that is my vans. i could wear vans everyday with a dress, jeans and a tee, or even a cropped dress pant and button down. just find a pair of shoes that are comfy and versatile. you do not want to look bummy.

when having a minimal wardrobe, your key it to look put together all the time. it’s okay to repeat outfits and key pieces. as long as you own your style it doesn’t matter what anyone else has to say.
