Jarrett Bennet: Fenty Not Fendi

Today’s topic of discussion is about Fenty, Rihanna’s first collection with the fashion giant LVMH. Over the past few years, she has been one of the “it-girls” within the realm of fashion. Brands such as Gucci, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton have used her for ads, marketing, etc. Recently, Rihanna became the very first woman to have her own solo collection with LVMH, which is completely ground breaking. The fact that she is a member of the African American community makes it even more special.

With Rihanna now having her first collection, this makes her the second African-American to hold high position at a major fashion house (first being Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton). However, I feel with her influence that this has the potential to be bigger than LV appointing Virgil as creative director.

Her first collection rolled out less than a month ago. From monochromatic color ways, pleated silhouettes, and pumps, the collection was very Rihanna to say the least. The accessories varied from hats, sunglasses, to roped ear cuffed pendants. All FIRE!!!!!!!! Some people would say it didn’t live up to expectations, but I thought it was smart. Being that it’s her very first collection, it showed that she didn’t want to do too much.

She brought new material to our attention. Such as suit jackets with Fanny packs attached. My personal favorite pieces from the collection are the Reversible Parka jacket ($1,360 USD), and the oversized Denim Jacket ($1,100 USD). Yes the collection is pricey, but it should be. This isn’t H&M or Zara.

Overall, I think this is great for the industry. In a period where fashion seems to focus more on “genderless shoppers”, this could be very big.  Let’s see what her next collection brings.
